Faith – Does Size Matter?

“You have faith, I have deeds. Show me your faith without deeds and I’ll show you my faith by what I do.” (James 2:18)

There is a substance to faith. Jesus talked many times about, “great faith,” (Matt 15:28) and, “little faith” (Matt. 8:26). The disciples petitioned Jesus, “Increase our faith.” So does size matter with faith? Yes . . . and No . . .

After one of Jesus’ statements about little faith he also said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, ‘Move.’” So, size doesn’t matter? I’m confused. There’s a tension here in the Scripture – it’s tensions that hold up the most beautiful truths in Scripture.

The truth is this,

  1. Faith is required – Without faith it’s impossible to please God. (Heb 11:6)
  2. Faith is always effective (at its smallest and largest, faith produces only one crop eternity).
  3. Faith can grow (That’s good news!)

How is that good news? That means that whatever you’re stuck in right now is probably one upgrade away from being history; that your faith has the ability to produce greater things in your life than ever before! Take a moment to ask, “Lord, increase my faith.” Now listen for what He asks you to do – because the next step is always simple obedience.
